Major local employer launches recruitment drive for care workers – is this the rewarding career change you’ve been looking for?

A vibrant campus which supports people with disabilities to have a lifetime of opportunity is recruiting care support workers.

Portland Charity’s new recruits will be part of a friendly team helping to transform lives every day.

Portland Charity employs 430 people and its residential and day care setting – Portland Freedom – is one of the most vibrant and fulfilling places to be, where no two days are the same and the workplace is described as “wonderful, special and magical”.

Ike Onwukwe, Assistant Principal – Care, from Portland said: “Our staff are at the heart of what we do. They are passionate about our vision and dedicate their careers to improving the lives of people with disabilities.

“We work hard to provide an outstanding place to work in a happy environment, where the rewards of a job well done can be seen in the faces and achievements of our young people.”

Career package

As well as being rewarding and fulfilling, working at Portland offers a complete package including flexible hours, good rates of pay, generous holidays (including a holiday buy-back scheme), extensive training and development, and Employee Assistance Programme, an Aviva pension scheme, life assurance and free parking.

And while previous experience is beneficial, it’s not vital as Portland offers an extensive training and development programme which supports people as new starts as well as they progress in their careers.

Current vacancies

Care support workers will support citizens across short breaks, independent living and residential further education.

This is a fantastic and rewarding opportunity to work with citizens to identify opportunities and help build confidence, social skills and independence both on the campus and out in the local community.

Ideal candidates want to work in a friendly and passionate team, delivering exceptional services to young people.

Shift patterns for these roles are flexible and may be a variety of shifts of up to 35 hours across 7 days.

Support

Staff health and well-being is important at Portland, where they work hard to support each individual and their needs.

Ike added: “Many of our staff have a disability and we’re proud to hold Disability Confident and Mindful Employer status, which recognises our positive approach to physical and mental health at work.

“We have launched a range of free health and well-being activities for staff to participate in such as Zumba, woodland walk and talks, circuit training and mindfulness.”

About the charity

Portland is an independent specialist college (Portland College) and registered care home (Portland Freedom) with over 400 citizens and learners on campus each day. It is graded Good by Ofsted and the Care Quality Commission and has won many awards for its excellent provision.

“Since opening in 1950, we have supported around 30,000 people with disabilities to live more independent, fulfilling lives,” said Ike. “We achieve this through a range of personalised care and education programmes, which support our young people to achieve their goals, their way.

“We offer residential and day options based on our 32-acre woodland campus. To enable more people to benefit from the Portland experience, we have recently expanded into hubs locally, including in Nottingham city.”
